If you’re wondering how to work online and travel the world in general or specifically on a sailing boat as a digital nomad then you’ve come to the right place. Alternatively, if you are a looking to work from home then this is also the place for you.
I’m going to share with you one of the things it took me the longest to discover- how to manage to earn a decent salary without needing to ‘’go to work’’.
In this post I’ll tell you about different type of jobs you can do online, especially how I manage with internet while I’m sailing, the salary I make in each place (in some of the places you don’t even need to have a degree to work there!).

So, how does it work? Do you have a signal when you’re in the sea?
Surprisingly, we do. As long as we’re sailing close to shore (and just so you’ll get proportions, most of the Mediterranean sailing is close to shore) there is a cellular signal.
To have internet we just turn a hotspot on in our phone and that’s totally enough.
It’s of course not always perfect- there are places with a bad signal or no signal at all but that doesn’t happen a lot.
We really hope to have in the near future satellite communication and then we will have signal in the middle of the sea. But that’s still a dream we have 😊
And what about the conditions? Is it comfortable to work during sailing?
Most of the times I work when the sea is calm or after we anchored in a bay, so the answer is yes.

What are the options?
When I was a student, I was working as a private teacher. Every day after university I took my car and drove an hour and a half to teach my students. I’ve been a private teacher for more than six years now.
One of the best things that happened since Covid was the transition to online teaching. Of course, it is not everywhere and all the time, but there is no doubt that online teaching is here to stay. This fact enables me to continue work as a private teacher from home, no matter where home is.
1. Private lessons:
This subject is divided into two mini subjects. I’ll present to you each one’s advantages and disadvantages.
· Private teacher as an independent- Being a private teacher does require some experience and feeling comfortable with the subject you’re about to teach. But hey, I also started with no experience, and you slowly get better and gain confidence (even Tomer, who also has some students, had no prior experience and is doing very well!). To gain that confidence, I would recommend you start with teaching young ages to become better with relatively simple material. The more confident you’ll get, the higher the level you’ll be able to teach. Teaching private lessons is good money, and the longer you’ll do it- the better you’ll become.
The major disadvantage is that it’s much harder to find students. As a matter of fact, the real work is finding them. For me, at some point it was too much to deal with, so I started looking for alternatives.
· Private lessons in big companies- as of now, this solution is what works best for me. The income is a lot lower compared to work as an independent, but the big advantage here is I have a lot of students and I can teach many hours each month (the hours I do depend on me and how much free time I have. There are months I can do 100 monthly hours).
These are Israeli companies and I teach students physics, math and biology. These companies usually have different projects that change constantly, so you can find there what suits you most.
The first company is called Dr. Logi, you can work there as independent. The second is called Gesher, and you can choose if you want to work as independent or salaried.

· If teaching doesn’t sound good to you, another cool option is being a transcriber. The same companies I mentioned above also give these services. The work is mainly transcribing live meetings, lessons etc. You don’t necessarily need any prior experience, but you do need to be prepared to write quite fast. This is also something you are going to get better at as you practice. The salary is different between companies but can reach up to around 15 euro per hour. Other places pay per page/ word so the faster you do it, the better the salary.
2. For the mechanical engineers among us:
Tomer is also working online as an engineer for a company in Israel. He is mostly developing a product using a 3D design software called SolidWorks.
